Going on leave for health reasons is quite traumatic and often leaves teachers feeling isolated. For several years, Edmonton Catholic and Edmonton Public teachers have jointly sponsored a support group for teachers on extended disability leave. The group meets informally once a month throughout the school year and usually brings in a guest speaker to deal with issues of interest to individuals on sick leave.
